~100 Deadliest Days

Vehicle crashes are one of leading causes of death among 16- to 24-year-olds. Some key contributors to crashes involving teen drivers in Pennsylvania include driver inexperience, driver distractions, driving too fast for conditions and improper or careless turning.
The time between Memorial Day and Labor Day is known as the “100 Deadliest Days”, where more than 30% of teen fatalities in vehicles with a teen driver occurs. Students are out of school and have more unstructured time to be on the roadways.
PennDOT encourages parents of teen drivers to set a good example - drive the way you want your teen to drive. Make sure your teen driver understands the rules of the road.
Here are some other tips for parents from AAA:
• Talk with teens early and often about abstaining from dangerous behavior behind the wheel, such as speeding, impairment and distracted driving.
• Teach by example- Maintain appropriate space around your vehicle, adjust your speed to the conditions and minimize risky behavior when you drive.
• Establish a parent-teen driving agreement that sets family rules for teen drivers.
• Conduct at least 50 hours of supervised practice driving with their teen.
• Enroll your teen in both online and in-person driving courses.
• Talk with your teens about anticipating other driver’s mistakes and how to adjust their driving to others.
